Starman by Phil Burns

Starman by Phil Burns

AnElephantCant stop loving Mr Bowie
Although his name is too difficult to rhyme
His music is amazing
If perhaps slightly crazy
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes but I can’t trace time

AnElephant is down in darkest Yorkshire
On a strange night in a mining village disco
When he first groks the novelty
Of the sensational Space Oddity
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go

This is way back in Nineteen Canteen
It seems like a lifetime ago
But Davie moves on
Becomes a chameleon
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go, it’s the freakiest show

He reappears as Ziggy Stardust
Changes his image in the blink of an eye
From sailors fighting in bars
To Spiders from Mars
There’s a starman waiting in the sky, he’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he’d blow our minds

Then Major Tom just reappears
And has his second Number One he
Is the first by name*
To achieve that aim
Ashes to ashes funk to funky

He releases the famous Berlin Trilogy
So different in every way
With perfect precision
Of Sound and Vision
We can be heroes just for one day

Our Davie is all grown up now
Still he continues to delight
His first album in ten years**
Is released to great cheers
Once again The Stars are out Tonight

  • Major Tom is the only person to appear by name in two different Chart topping songs.
    Probably.
